Dr. Sara Powell

Director & Founder
PhD, HCPC, MBACP UK Reg

Sara is from the UK, a Third Culture Kid/Adult who grew up in the Gulf. She holds a PhD in International Psychology, with a specialization in Trauma, from Chicago USA.

Sara is a registered psychotherapist (MBACP) with BACP UK, and a registered art psychotherapist with HCPC UK and BAAT UK. Sara holds a MA in art psychotherapy and a qualification in supervision through CPCAB UK.

Sara is an experienced psychotherapist with 15 years of clinical experience. She has worked with diverse communities. She is passionate about supporting the mental well-being of women and children. As a mother of three young children, she identified a significant gap in perinatal and postnatal mental health services within the region. This insight inspired her to establish ATIC’s Early Intervention and Development services, which have since become a cornerstone of the practice. Her growing focus is on trauma and the integration of non-verbal, bodily, and sensory-based therapeutic approaches, alongside culturally attuned, faith-based interventions that honor clients' spiritual frameworks as part of the healing process.

Sara has been involved in various consulting projects with government agencies in Singapore, UAE, and Qatar in the areas of forensic, juvenile and offenders, addiction, eating disorders, and within medical settings and schools. Sara also collaborates with the likes of Cornell Medical School, Qatar, and Virginia Commonwealth University, Qatar (VCU-Q). Her involvement includes research, lecturing and training. Sara is a core lecturer on the level 6 diploma 'Creative Therapeutic Practice for Children and Young People' in collaboration with VCU-Q.

Sara has authored numerous publications, and is the editor of 'Making its Mark: Art Therapy in the Arabian Peninsula', a first for such publication's showcasing the works of pioneering art therapists in the region. Sara has presented at regional and international conferences, and serves as a member of the community outreach committee at the Middle East Psychological Association (MEPA). She also served as an invited speaker at the Global Women's Forum in Dubai in 2020.
